Forgive the insubordination, but this old friend has an order for you. Go out there and give them hell. You were born to do this. –Garrus Vakarian

Garrus Vakarian, aka Archangel the turian sniper, former Citadel cop, best friend to the legendary commander Shepard and all-around badass. I love this guy, I really do. He’s sarcastic, calm in the heat of a firefight, and always has your back throughout the Mass Effect game series.

This game series is a carefully crafted sci-fi universe where all your choices can affect even the smallest of details. You could spare an enemy’s life and they could become a great ally, or they could come back to kill you. You could choose to not save someone’s life, and an entire planet could pay the price. You could choose to assist someone, and they could become your best friend.

You obviously haven’t seen turians swim. It’s a lot of flailing and splashing interrupted by occasional bouts of drowning. –Garrus, Mass Effect 3

Garrus_Character_BoxGarrus loves to poke fun and have a good time, all the while being protective of both you and your teammates. He knows when it’s time to buckle down and get serious, especially when his teammates’ lives are at stake.

While being separated from you for 2 years, he became known as Archangel, protecting the weak from hostile powers. He cares about making a difference and doing the right thing, even if it doesn’t always seem like it.

I’m all for second chances. Not so sure about third ones. – Garrus, Mass Effect 2

When you befriend this alien in the first game, he has your back through the entire series, willing to sacrifice everything for the sake of you and your mission. All the while, through chats on missions and on your ship, you and your character develop a friendship with him, or even a romantic relationship, should you make a female character and go with that sort of thing. But back to him being a hilariously sarcastic badass.

If this ends with the both of us dying in a giant explosion killing a Reaper, just remember. I took the kill shot.- Garrus, Mass Effect 3

I’ll be honest, it’s really hard to describe just how much I love this character without filling this blog with a ton of quotes. Because that’s one of the great things about the Mass Effect series. It’s your story. Your character. The choices you make and things you say directly impact the games and their story. You’re the one who decides how things happen and med_1409622182_1381916785_imagewhat to do with the world you are given. So it’s not Commander Shepard, the main character’s, story, it’s yours. And so are the relationships you build with the characters in it.

What I’m saying is, the reason why Garrus is such a great character in my eyes isn’t just because of the writing or the voice acting, which are all top-notch, but because I sat down and took the time to actually become his friend, to help him with his problems, and to kick ass along the way. He’s one of those characters that you need to interact with in your own way to see how he truly shines, because he reacts and does things differently based on what you do. That’s why he’s great to me. Because I actually made the effort to become his friend, and he returned the favor by becoming mine.

It’s so much easier to see the world in black and white. Grey? I don’t know what to do with grey. . . – Garrus Vakarian, Mass Effect 2
